The
Conformist Learner and The Concrete Learner
In
teaching english theory, there are four different learner styles within a group.
The four different learner styles are converger learner, conformist learner,
concrete learner, and communicative learner. Before someone is going to be an
english teacher, she or he must identify about each learner styles. Each
learner styles has their own characteristics. The characteristics of each
learner styles are like the confidence in their own ability, the social
interaction, and the goals of their language learning. These characteristics seem
approximately similar in conformist learner and concrete learner. On the other
hand, some characteristics apparently opposite in conformist learner and
concrete learner.
The
confidence conformist learner and concrete learner show almost the same on
their own ability. Both of conformist learner and concrete learner are
dependent on those in authority. The authority means their confidence which prefers
to see well-organized teachers. These learner styles are happier work in the
guidance of a teacher. These learner styles are also more enjoyable to do
activities which have been managed by teacher in the classroom.
Eventhough
the confidence of them approximately equal, there are some differences which
important to know among them.
One
the difference between conformist learner and concrete learner is social
interaction. The conformist learner is perfectly happy to work in
non-communicative classrooms. The conformist learner is dependent on someone
who is more clever than him or her. In contrast, the concrete learner enjoys
the social aspects in learning. The concrete learner prefers to work in group
or play games with other srudents.
Last,
the other difference between conformist learner and concrete learner is the
goal of their language learning. The conformist learner prefers to emphasize learning
‘about language’ over learning. It means that conformist learner is more
interested to learn about language as a system rather than use the language in
many times. On the other hand, concrete learner is more interested in language
use and language as communication. It means that concrete learner usually tries
to practice the language as long as he or she could. Concrete learner enjoys to
learn from direct experience by communicating with other people.
In
brief, these leaner styles have their own characteristics which need to
identified and understood by an english teacher. Because both the conformist
learner and concrete learner have different need in language learning. Teacher
must know how to teach them based on these characteristics. Teacher must also
decide which the method is appropriate for them in daily classroom activities.
